I believe that most people who seek out treatment for themselves have an earnest desire to get better, but the shame and the guilt are extremely difficult for them to overcome. My experience is that if their family members are not treated as well then the stage is set for them to return to using their drugs / alcohol that they were originally using when they sought services. If the effects of addiction of the children, significant others, and family members are not addressed the entire system will remain chaotic and dysfunctional. The reason for this chaos and dysfunction is that when the addict/alcoholic attempts to clean up and re-engage in their relationships the other parties are still feeling the hurt, anger, etc that the addict/alcoholic's actions have planted. Thus all of the members of the family and even close friends are benefited from expressing this and being counseled on right techniques to cope and move forward.
